There are a number of details
involved in designing a new home and it is very easy to overlook certain
aspects of what will make it a home. I have been a home designer for almost
three decades now and have produced a list of things that are often forgotten
in the layout. Maybe that list can help you.
Number one on my list is storage
space! Do you allow this? Chances are if your house is a mess now, you have too
much accumulated stuff or there isn’t enough storage space to store these
items. If you ignore this in your new home design, you might move one problem
from your old residence to a new one.
Lack of storage at home is:
– Pantry for additional food such
as canned goods that will overflow from the kitchen cupboard.
– Wardrobe that is too small to
handle the wardrobe of family members for at least one season. Make sure the
size is big enough.
– Coat of arms at the entrance of
the house. When this is eliminated, the living room, kitchen or dining room
starts to become the catch for winter coats.
– Linen cabinets are often
overlooked too. This space is for sheets, pillowcases, washcloths, and towels.
Too often, if the house does not have a linen closet, additional shelves must
be added to handle this.
– Attic or basement storage that
is easily accessible for storing Christmas lights and family mementos. When
loft storage or basements are not available, the garage fills all these items.
If the house is in an area that is
experiencing more than normal rain or snow, is there room for mud to take off
muddy boots so you don’t track the house? I have seen a mud room equipped with
a sink for washing before coming to the main house. This is also a good aspect
of a well-designed home if someone at home likes to do automatic mechanics in
the garage. They can wash the oil before they reach home.
One more thing to consider is
letting enough natural light into the house. Too often there are too few
windows that point in the right direction to capture natural light in the
morning and at night.…
As the spring and summer months approach, it’s the perfect
time to freshen up rooms. The problem is that nowadays most of us just haven’t
got the cash to spend on our homes that we would like. Here are some ideas for
creating that interior design magazine look without the expense.
* Clean, declutter and clean again! Clutter makes rooms
look…cluttered! Remove all the bits and pieces from tables and the tops of
furniture and put them into clearly labeled boxes to store out of the way
somewhere for two weeks. After the time is up anything still in the boxes is
obviously not necessary. This works very well with kids’ toys and games. Just
remember when the two weeks is up to get rid of anything still in the boxes,
give it away or hold a garage sale.
* It only takes a little bit more effort to paint a wall
than to wash it. Spring cleaning is great for working off the winter blues, but
a coat of paint will change the whole room. White is usually the cheapest paint
to buy, but if you don’t want plain white buy the smallest quantity you can of
a dark or bright color, add it to the white then stir. Keep stirring until the
colored paint is completely mixed in. You can also use tubes of acrylic
artists’ paints that can be bought very cheaply, to add some color to regular
* Visit your local flea market or thrift store. These places
are treasure troves of décor accessories. Buy some cheap frames,
paint them to match and fill them with some exotic pictures clipped from
magazines or travel brochures. Old curtains in cotton or linen materials can be
dyed in the washing machine. Dye two pairs to match, use one pair for window dressing
and the other to make matching pillows.
* If you don’t have a dining table, cover a sturdy wallpaper
pasting table with a fresh cloth, the further it hangs down the better, add a
beautiful vase of fresh flowers in the center of the table. Smarten up old
dining chairs with fresh new seat covers and find some new table linen to
* Buy an old piece of wooden furniture and paint it white.
Find an old wooden dresser for a few dollars from an auction or thrift store;
add a coat of white paint, some that you have left over from painting the walls
is fine. Then rub it down lightly to give it a distressed look and apply a
little furniture wax. Before you know it you have a French armoire.
There are a host of other ideas for affordable home
décor. Just because your budget is tiny it doesn’t mean that you
can’t give a whole new look to your home. Use your imagination and whatever
small amount of cash you have to good effect and you will soon have a home to
be proud of.…
The wall is a part of the house that greatly affects the
overall look and feel. As home enthusiasts, we make sure that our wall reflects
style, uniqueness and individualism. However, since we usually go with the
latest trend of wall decor and home accents, we mostly find our walls quite
similar with other owners which we probably don’t like. To avoid this, we must
try to think of ways to promote radically distinctive modern wall decor or
modern wall artwork to accentuate the walls of our home.
Today’s concept of interior design are is likely inclined to
musical themes. More owners are renovating their houses to include a music or
media room to its design. Since music rooms are now used as a particular areas
to unwind and enjoy music, there are now home accents and wall decor available
to complement it. Popular music wall art and music wall decor includes:
1. Musical Notes
2. Jazz Saxophone Wall Art Decor
3. Trumpet with Notes Wall Decor Art
4. Guitar with Musical Notes
5. Aluminum Musical Note
6. Music Notes Wall Art Decor
Music art sets the mood for any room. This is ideal for the
music room at home, in school or even in the kid’s room. Another great concept
is a hanging decor featuring a clef of music notes. It does not only allow you
to put useful visual aids for music classes (at school) but it is also a unique
way to decorate the media room at home.
You can choose to design and make your own artistic decor or
if you are willing to invest more, you can ask a professional interior designer
to do the work for you. Putting up a music room inside the house adds another
interesting area for your family, friends and guest who loves music. They can
use the room to relax while listening to music, hang out with the band or use
it to release everyday stress.
You can also check out online stores to look for more
varieties of wall decor and home accents. Other accessories you can use are
metal wire music art for general purpose or choose from trumpet wall art, french
horn wall art or saxophone wall art set to put additional substance to the
